Impressions of Cairo

The Nile at Night

One of the first things that struck me about Cairo was the absence of streetlights. Cairo is one of the world’s most ancient cities, and while there is light from a myriad of shops, and untold thousands of people are thronging in the dark , there is no uniform system of streetlights. Instead of seeming scary, however, there is just a kind of warm glow from the multitude of activity. It’s a city teeming with life; and it makes you want to go out into the dark and join the crowd.

I couldn’t help but be amazed at the ancient and contemporary architecture of such an ancient and beautiful city. But I was also surprised (given my ignorance about this part of the world) at the intensity of the smog. Thanks for the continued photos and commentary. — Bill
